This Saturday, October 12, is likely to be our last day for PYO in 2024! With a little luck, it will also be our first day selling cider.
It’s been wonderful welcoming folks to the orchard and we wish we could do it for longer, but we expect that nearly all the fruit will need to be picked by the end of next week. So, if you are in Amherst this weekend, please come on by between 11am and 4pm on Saturday. The foliage is gorgeous. Unfortunately, Sunday’s weather does not look great for picking, so we are currently not planning to be open for picking, but if that changes we will announce it on our Facebook page or Instagram @plum.brook.farm.
We’ll have plenty of Jonagold, Spigold, Mutsu (aka Crispin), Ida Red, and Golden Delicious. Lesser quantities of Baldwin and Stark’s Mac, and the last of the Cortland, Empire, Liberty, Macoun, and Rhode Island Greening. Asian pears are also available.
We’ll provide half-peck and peck bags (or bushel boxes if you need them) and some tips on picking. Bring family, friends, and your camera, and feel free to pack a lunch and a picnic blanket, or use our picnic tables. Sorry, no pets or tree-climbing allowed, and no public bathroom available. Note that PYO parking is available from the farm entrance at approximately 495 Middle Street, about 100 yards north from the Bay Road intersection, not at the farmstand location on Bay Road.
We use 100% organic practices and materials, but are not certified organic. This is not an easy way to grow fruit in New England, but we are fortunate to have a high quality crop this year. The later varieties have time to develop sooty blotch, but these gray smudges are harmless, don’t affect flavor, and can be washed/rubbed off.
Our farmstand will continue to be open daily for at least anther month. We have over a dozen varieties of apples in cold storage, raspberries still producing well in the high tunnels, and hope to have cider starting this weekend and through the rest of the season and for Thanksgiving.
See you at the orchard!
